Advantages Of Geothermal Systems

The most cost-effective and widely used heating and cooling systems are known as the geothermal systems. These systems use the earth's ability to tap vast amount of heat which is maintained at a constant temperature near surface rocks and soil. That is why they are called as geothermal systems. These systems also known as ground source heat pump. This is because they trap the heat energy and transfer it from the earth to a building.

Now, let us discuss how these geothermal heat pumps work. All typical geothermal systems transfer the heat from the earth. This is done through a network of tubes which are called closed loops. These loops are filled with either refrigerant, water or an anti-freeze solution.

Geothermal Systems

The loops run through the ground in the area where the building is and the heat energy is absorbed by the liquid inside the loops. This warm liquid is then pumped back into the building through the system. The whole process described provides heat to the indoor space of the building. Once the energy is spread in the spaces of the building, the liquid flows back to the earth and the process is repeated.

One important thing to note is that these geothermal systems can be used even for cooling purposes. During summers, for cooling purpose, the process is not exactly reversed but there are a series of valves that enable the system to switch from hot to cold.

The heat contained in the building is transferred back to the liquid. This, in turn, is pumped into the ground. When the pump is in cooling mode, it has a lot of warm liquid. This liquid heats the water for the building and eliminates the need of water heater during summer.

After a detailed discussion on the geothermal system and how it works, let's throw some light on the benefits of these systems.

These systems use 25-70%less electricity than the common heat pumps.

These pumps are more energy efficient.

By this advantage, the pumps produce more heat energy. The heat pump serves two purposes namely heating and cooling. These systems use 25 to 50% less energy than other systems. So, you spend less on the monthly bills. This translates into savings for you.

Another advantage is that they can be fitted and installed easily even in homes that have traditional systems already fitted in them.

The above mentioned advantages of the heat pumps would definitely inspire you to get these systems installed at your house or workplace. The best part of geothermal systems is that they involve less consumption of energy and also reduces the amount of pollution that is produced by fossil fuel system.
